Golden Orient - 639 High Road Leytonstone, London E11
Number of visits?
Several, most recently 2004.Location?
Leytonstone in the East End - next to the train station, and a ten minute walk from the tube station.Food?
Indian. A wide range, with highlights including quail jalfrezi and goat curry. However there are also many more recognisable dishes such as chicken dhansak and vegetable balti. The side dishes are very well done, especially the sweet sag paneer, and interesting, such as lemon rice. Drinks are quite acceptable - cobra lager, woodpecker cider, and a range of others - and the only let down are the deserts - straight out of the freezer. Nonetheless, the starters, side and main dishes are extremely well prepared. Staff will also adapt dishes to your taste - just ask.Clientele
Locals, a mix of cultures and ages.Cost?
£12-£15 per head, allow £5 for drinks.Anything else?
Staff are extremely personable and helpful, although they do appear to take it personally if you cannot eat everything! A friendly environment. Tables are a little cramped. On the first Wednesday of each month there is "Curryoke" - a karaoke event in the evening. Advance booking recommended.
